Miley Cyrus Leads TIME’s Person of the Year Poll With 3 Days Left

Who will take the crown in our annual reader's choice poll? We break down what's happened so far

We’re three days away from the end of TIME’s 2013 Person of the Year poll. Here’s an update on where things stand. Miley Cyrus leads the rankings with 20.2% (as of Monday) of the votes, followed by Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi with 18.6% and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with 18.3%.

Egypt is driving the most traffic of any country to Person of the Year voting, which may explain el-Sisi’s number 2 spot. Erdoğan’s votes are mostly coming from Twitter.

As part of our partnership with Twitter around this year’s Person of the Year conversation, we opened up our reader’s choice poll to social media voting on Twitter using Poptip. Users can vote by tweeting their choice with #TIMEPOY or on Time.com, where Poptip’s technology is recording, visualizing and analyzing results in real time.

We’ve fended off several attempts to rig the poll’s results but the tally of legitimate votes on Monday morning is clear: Miley Cyrus is the front-runner.

Miley fans went turbo on Twitter in a social campaign for the headliner-maker, which two programmers took credit for, but Poptip and TIME’s security measures ensured that only legitimate votes were  counted. That means Miley’s fans really did get out the vote:

The Syrian Electronic Army also took to Twitter saying they were unhappy with the way TIME described  Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The organization briefly gained access  to the TIME Twitter account through Poptip’s dashboard, but was quickly shut out. The tweet and their campaign failed to move the needle for Assad.

According to Poptip statistics, Assad and Miley were the only two candidates who received more votes through social media than directly through TIME.com.

Assad received 56.5%  of his votes on Twitter with the hashtag #TIMEPOY, and Miley received 95.3% of her votes the same way. Many of her fans returned to Twitter every day to cast additional votes. (Each Twitter/Facebook account is allowed to vote once per day for each POY candidate. The numbers reflect this.)

Of course, as soon as Miley caught wind of her success last week, she too took to Twitter to express her excitement:

Other candidates, like Indian politician Narendra Modi and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, have seen aggressive campaigns on Twitter too:

A separate portion of the poll pitted candidates against each other in a series of face-offs. In the Barack Obama vs. Edward Snowden matchup, eight out of 10 people voted in favor of Snowden. In the faceoff between Japan’s Shinzo Abe and India’s Narendra Modi, 96% opted for the latter.

There are only three days left to vote so be sure to tell us who you’d choose for Person of the Year on Time.com here or on Twitter using the hashtag #TIMEPOY. We’ll announce the final results of the poll on Dec. 6, and will reveal who’s been named Person of the Year (ultimately decided by TIME editors) on Dec. 11.

It was a bad move of Time to open the voting up to kids on twitter and social media.  This is supposed to be for people who have had a significant impact, not a popularity contest.

What a very poor commentary on our times that this girl would even be remotely considered, with all the people in this country working so very hard to try and make this country and world a better place you nominate a chick because she takes her clothes off at the drop at off a pin and sticks her disgusting tongue out every 2 minutes, seriously who did she blow on your staff to even be thought off, most people do not give a thought about her except the media who keeps shoving her in our face every time she sticks her ass out, this does NOT make her an artist, there is a long list of celebutards ahead of her that has done this, it's not like it's original, she is not known for what little talent she has, she is known for her stunts, it's funny that strippers and prostitutes are vilified but the only difference between them and her is she's paid better.  I am ashamed that this is what is deemed important in this country now and you should be too, my only consolation is her 15 mins are bound to be up before too long because true artistry will shine in the end.

Wow! 1) TIME is still around? and 2) What is a Miley Cyrus? Amazing that TIME isn't wetting its pants over the Obamanation again... I say give "Person of the Year" to Richard Nixon, because all of a sudden he looks like a saint next to his current successor....

@qzx007  Egyptians have chosen Gen. el-Sisi who deposed the Obama-supported Muslim Brotherhood terrorists.

PLEASE get a life. Then get another life. Morsi did NOT kill people. Sissy Boy killed OVER THREE THOUSAND in one day. And guess what? He bulldozed over men, women, and children, as well as infants and newborns. If these people are terrorists--the people in Rabia, and the other peaceful protesters, who were burned alive and after they were killed-- then you need your priority straight. So much for American freedom and the like, eh??!!!

I heard that Miley Cyrus was considered for time person of the year on tee radio this a.m. I thought it was a joke.  She is 20!! She is a horrible role model. So many people deserve Person of the Year. It is a insult to these people. I get that TIME Person of the Year is someone who has influenced the year good or bad but choosing Miley Cyrus is a slap in the face to parents who struggle to raise their children with decency and respect. Shame on TIME for succumbing to sensationalism to become more visible. A 20 year old naked on a wrecking ball licking a sledgehammer for shock value is simply wrong. I thoroughly agree Snowden would be a better choice.

Surely TIME is not actually serious about making Miley Cyrus as TIMEPOY !! ?

For those of you out there who are for her, what has she done in 2013 that is momentous?  Nothing, except take her clothes off.  Anyone can do this and it's not like we haven't seen the nude female body !  TIME should not kow-tow to the sheer number of votes for Miley.  It's called "stuffing the ballot box".

Snowden is a man who has committed treason and sedition and is a fugitive from justice.  However, he would be a better choice for TIMEPOY than Miley !!

I voted for Miley Cyrus for POY just cause I'd love to see what would happen if she actually won. Because all in all, what does it matter anyway? Next year will be a new year, and two years from now no one will even remember this.

Malala was gypped out of Time's POY last year.  She deserves it this year after all she has done!  WTF are you people THINKING?

Definitely President Bashar Al Assad because He is cleaning the world of the most dangerous terrorists and preventing them from taking over a country like Syria. I know that the Latter is not an ideal example for democracy but it is still better with people like Assad than with extremists who's daily bread is beheading innocent civilians and soldiers.

One should also bear in mind that Adolf Hitler also has been TIME Magazine Person of the Year. This is not necessarily an honorable achievement.

Time, you are supposed to be a paragon of substance and not pop culture.

Really, really disappointed. You should inspire us by other people's accomplishments in matter of peace, humanitarian acts or philanthropy. Talk about milestones in politics, science, world economy et al. But I guess "crap" like these don't get sales up and SHIT like this shoots up revenue.

But whatever, I hope she wins.

My vote would be for Malala Yousafzai, but even though Jeff Bezos is turning out to be a greedy, evil genius, it's probably his year. In any case, many of us are counting on you, Time editors, not to drink the Kool-aid that certain Twitter masses have been sipping and to make an appropriate choice. Afterall, making twerking mainstream is not the type of influence for which anyone, especially a woman or Time, should be proud.

EmmaMyaj

Bitchey cyrus ? Are you F* kidding me ? SERIOUSLY ? WHAT has she done ? Influenced young women (including lil' girls) to become whores ? Is that who your TIME POY will/should be ? Why is she even on the list ? She only made her ridiculous "buzz" by the end of 2013, she neither influenced, nor was THE Person of the Year. This is real shit, and you should be ashamed for even putting her up there. So disgusted by this society, such a shame, all the wrong people are being noticed. You already knew that her fans, who got her videos seen more than a billion times (just because she asked them to) were going to make her win this shit, this is not even fair to some of the other candidates who actually did make a change in this world and DESERVE this title. Plus she's telling people herself to vote for her, this is so ridiculous, imagine yourself telling people "hey vote for me, i should be Person of the year because i'm fuck**g awesome, i showed my pussy and my boobs to the entire world and to all of your children, i almost twerked and showed my (non existing) ass everywhere i could". Well, if Miley Shittyrus wins this title, this society is as wrecked as she is.

This is the reason dictators from the middle east &

plastic celebrities are winning your 'poll'.

You need a better method of 'sampling' the US and/or World.

Uniqueness is another problem.

Since I do not have or want a Twitter or Farcebook account, I cannot vote.

Put me down for 1) Pope Francis, 2) Wendy Davis

It would be uhhhhmazig to be #timepoy smilerzzzz lets see if we can make it happennnnn   <---pretty sure this sums up why there is no WAY that Miley Cyrus should be person of the year.

To think that TIME -an alleged news publication-  would even allow this travesty to happen sickens me. I can't imagine People magazine making this one a person of the year much . In a nutshell: what's wrong with people that are upvoting her? What about Malala or our heroes that are out there fighting for our country?

Just something else to Distract the Minions of this nation of sheep from the real issues...  SMDH ... Funny.... How Paul Walkers  Death gets More fanfare the the Deaths of those Fighting for our Livelihood and Freedoms we enjoy... Or of the level 5 Radiation alerts that are comeing on the west coast... and the Middle of our country... when the SHIT hits the fan.... 80% of you are going to think the GOVERNMENT will Protect you?...and you will be Willing Lead By the NOSE to the Slaughterhouse.... Are you people freaking kidding us with this??? Miley Cyrus??? She is a nasty piece of trash who is not in any way someone to be admired or respected. I don't care how many records she's sold or how many teens she's influenced (scary, right?) she's a train wreck who is more of an embarrassment than role model. Rand Paul...also WTF??? I am not a practicing Catholic and pretty much hate the church but without a doubt Time's Person Of the Year should be Pope Francis. THIS is a man who has influenced and inspired the whole world with his progressive moves away from the impractical old doctrines of the church. ALso how about Malala...let's see....Miley Cyrus...Malala...tough choice, right??

The person at Time who thought that trailer trash Miley Cyrus qualifies for person of the year must be related to the person at Time who selected Adolf Hitler in 1936.

@harleymutt The fact that you are so passionate and hell-bent on hating her in such a detailed paragraph describes why she would be a perfect choice for POY as a controversial and polarizing social figure. The fact that she has the bravado to do what she wants with her artistry and body among misogynistic and body-shaming people such as yourself are proof of her strength and status as a third wave feminist figure. Funny, people were saying that her "15 minutes" would be up back in 2006, yet here we are in 2013 and she's bigger than ever. The criticism she has faced opens up the dialogue for the pressures placed on female artists to remain "sexy yet likeable." In a year in which so much criticism of her has been so loud, it's interesting to note how she has been #1 in the Billboards with her singles and new album, and how her upcoming tour is selling out. The woman is a talented singer in touch with America. The choice makes nothing but sense, though I am fond of Pope Frances, or the runner-up Edith Windsor.

you are belong to moslem brotherhood , it is clear , you says things never happened , who kild the protestors , the Islamic brotherhood , go to youtube there are a lot of videos reveal how they kild their people not the army , usual who belong to them don't say the truth. Morsey took the gas and left the people without it , power station without fuel and give it to hamas for free , moslem brother hood did in rabaa what they are doing in syria of terrorism , they killed christians , burnt 82 historic churches , they put in rabaa mosque a hanger to hang people who refused to leave the protest area , in the last days of rabaa they get from the down stage bodes of who they killed and through them to the garbage they burnt their body , burnt the mosque of rabaa to hide what they were doing , ...ext ... it is better to say the truth..

General : CICI could lose his life and head if the people of egypt didn;t accept what he did , he released Morsy upon the request of most egyptians two times in egypt and out side of Egypt.

@RedResonable Don't blame TIME Magazine. They don't control who folks decide to cast their votes for. Make no mistake about it, this is OUR fault...  America's fault. In a nation where we care more about gun rights than we do about women's rights...  Where half of our population draws comparisons between our current president and Adolf Hitler just because they don't like the color of his skin or his healthcare reform bill...  Only in a nation like that would we put Miley Cyrus in the number one spot five places ahead of someone like Wendy Davis who champions women's rights in the red state of Texas.

@DavidVelez Because the people at Time are clueless. Look at some of the other candidates. Remember, this is the same group that selected Adolf Hitler as Man of the Yer in 1936.

away from the bullshit you've just said (which is about 99.99 wrong), tell me more about your God Sisi who claimed that he came through protests (the choice the Egyptian people) and the first thing he has done was eliminating his rivals and the opposition. in addition to banning protests, considering any satire against him as a crime, the cruelty against women and children, the 10 young girls (15 to 20 years old) sentenced with 11 years of prison just because they were in a protest, police killing people in the streets as a norm and much more ..... you just went full retard bro. .... Sisi could lose his life just for his own interests and greed not for Egyptian people who he doesn't care much about them ....
