Egypt’s Sisi Wins Reader Poll for TIME Person of the Year

The general, who led the ouster of his country's President and installed an interim government, beat out Turkey's Prime Minister and pop star Miley Cyrus

Egypt’s General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, who toppled the first democratically-elected government in the Arab world’s most populous nation, is the winner of the TIME’s 2013 Person of the Year poll.

Sisi received 449,596 votes, or 26.2% of the total, beating out Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who received 356,771 votes or 20.8%, and American pop star Miley Cyrus, who received 279,300 votes or 16.3%.

Sisi’s numbers were driven by massive support from his native Egypt: the country accounted for the largest number of votes on the TIME.com poll. India and the United States provided the second and third highest number of responses, respectively. TIME’s Person of the Year is chosen by the magazine’s editors and will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

As part of TIME’s partnership with Twitter to host this year’s Person of the Year conversation, we opened up our reader’s choice poll to social media voting on Twitter using Poptip. Users could vote by tweeting their choice with #TIMEPOY or on Time.com, where Poptip’s technology analyzes results in real time.

More than 1.3 million votes were submitted on TIME.com and nearly 560,000 others were registered via Twitter, for a total of 1,928,130 votes cast.

Sisi, whose formal title is defense minister but who is widely thought to dominate the transitional government he appointed, has enjoyed widespread popularity in Egypt since leading the July ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi after millions of Egyptians took to the streets to protest Morsi’s authoritarian leadership. Morsi, the first democratically-elected president after Egypt’s “Arab Spring” in 2011, was a POY candidate last year.

Sisi’s win in the poll marks an impressive comeback: as recently as Monday, he trailed Cyrus by nearly 2 percentage points. He also beat out write-in candidates Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, and Hillary Clinton.

Cyrus took an early lead thanks to an active fan base—she was ahead when voting tallies were announced midway through the poll—but lost ground in the second half of voting despite calls for support from Cyrus herself:

In face-off contests between Person of the Year candidates, there were some big wins and some close calls. Here, a sample of the results:

Miley Cyrus (93%) beat Jimmy Fallon (7%)

Abdul Fattah al-Sisi (56%) beat Recep Tayyip Erdogan (44%)

Malala Yousafzai (59%) beat Angelina Jolie (41%)

Pope Francis (68%) beat Prince George (32%)

Hassan Rouhani (79%) beat Benjamin Netanyahu (21%)

Edward Snowden (82%) beat Barack Obama (18%)

Lebron James (50%) tied Diana Nyad (50%)

what happened in 30 \ 6 popular revolution  and not a coup this was a revolution against

the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood and terrorist. Sisi helped the Egyptian people to recover their freedom and he refuses to run for the presidency, but the Egyptian people will  ask him to run for the president of Egypt

As I stated in an earlier thread, this poll speak more about Time than the winner.

My question would be if Morsi really "won the election" as you say, regardless of who helped him.  If the majority of Egyptians voted for Morsi and then he was removed by force.  Does not that make the people that removed him the terrorist?  And BTW you should read current American history, nobody over here, including Obama wanted the Muslin Brotherhood to win that election.  Not sure if you heard, but us and the Muslims don't get along so well.  We were pulling for a secular government.  Why does Obama get blamed for everything?  Just saying.

You said, 'who toppled the first democratically-elected government.'

I am afraid you mislead your readers sir.

Sisis did not topple the first democratically-elected president of Egypt. In the first place, Mubarak was the first 'democratically elected' president. He won the presidential election of 2005!

If you guys do not reckon Mubarak's election for being fabricated, then Morsi's election comes first in line of fabricated elections,

Morsi's 2012 presidential election saw unprecedented manners of fabrication and box stuffing. They threatened Copts in upper egypt villages so that they do not vote. (copts are Christians and were definitely expected not to vote for Mozlem Brotherhood)
Thousands of pre-checked ballots were found before being put in the boxes. God only knows how many of them found their way into the boxes.

***MORSI BEING CALLED THE FIRST DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT IS BUT A BIG HOAX***

Time conveniently ignores the India's Future Prime Minister "Narendra Modi" Who came fourth in the list and won with a huge margin on a face-off with the Japanese Prime Minister (96% v/s 4%) which is the highest... Shame on you for these kind of biased reporting! And just google some of the things that happens in Egypt, Turkey where you can buy votes for these kind of online polls... And no wonder how the Egyptian leader came first in this poll. And not to forget the atrocities this Egyptian leader has done to his people. At least, Narendra Modi has won three consecutive elections held in a democratic country like India on the plank of development...

Actually, General Sisi means a lot to us because he had enough courage and guts to topple a radical group that has seized power in Egypt by cheating simple people who know nothing about democracy and freedom, but only know what they think they know about God and religion. General Sisi could have lived in peace with them seeing them destroying Egypt, humiliating women and liberal people and just watched all that. General Sisi knew the consequences but he preferred to face the challenges than to leave Egypt fall into an era of darkness and retiliation. As we see and learn more about the way MB and their supporters think and behave, we appreciate more and more what General Sisi has done. However, you should be honest to admit that General Sisi would have never done this, if not for the massive anger among Egyptians  that outrgaed during the months preceding July 2013.

@KyleSmith1 you should re-think about the " us and the Muslims don't get along so well " and re-read about the cooperation between jihadi Muslims and US in Afghanistan to fight against Russia ,,,, they do get along when its needed to be ,,,,
also you can re-think when NATO agreed to establish bases in Turkey under the govern of an Islamic party ,,,
and there's more ,,,

How so? Isn't the future of the middle east primarily guided by country population and geographical advantage? If he did change the plan, it is minor relative to these issues surrounding centrally-located Iraq and the influences of Iran and Turkey and Shia-Sunni politics. Of what influence is he on these major forces, when of secondary forces there are many, like Russian interests, Israeli interests, Chinese interests, and finally weak Saudi interests?

Just a skeptical question. I'm not married to one point of view.
