As part of TIME’s partnership with Twitter around our 2013 Person of the Year, Pope Francis, Twitter created the image below to show how the news spread around the world. People in more than 130 countries spread the word within an hour of the announcement on NBC’s Today show and on Twitter. 52% of the tweets were from outside the US, including 12% from Central and South America and another 13% from Asia. Outside North America, the countries with the most mentions of @pontifex, #TIMEPOY and other terms around the choice, were Argentina, Indonesia, the Philippines, Spain, France, Italy and Mexico — all countries with high numbers of Roman Catholics. The original @TIME tweet that broke the news has been retweeted more than 17,000 times since then.
